Photostyling 101

Supermodel Heidi Klum and Funny man Will Farrell have a spread together in the May 2008 Swimsuit Issue of Sports Illustrated. Look at how nicely a model and a non-model (in a basketball uniform) complement each other in a non-threatenting, non-ugly, and non-menacing way. Granted, the above photo is based on Will Farrell’s not so funny movie Semi-Pro but you guys get the idea, right?

Miss Anna over there at Vogue and my once favorite photographer Annie Leibovitz (she’s done some wack photoshoots and is playing herself right NOW!) should take some notes on how a photoshoot of this style can be done without marginalizing or cannibalising the image.

More photos after the jump.

Shoppin’ In A 90s Kind Of World

Almost everyday I get a sample sale report from Daily Candy. Their coverage of trendy/interesting stuff, sample sales, and all things fashion is the-most-comprehensive on the internet. Normally I just read it and make a mental note, but one of entries struck me as very interesting and I will definitely attend one particular sale.

From May 5 – May 16, Showroom Seven, a multi-room, fashion showroom will have a sample sale featuring such lines as Charlotte Ronson, Orla Kiely, Erickson Beamon, Soundgirl, A&G Cashmere, and more. But that’s not the cool part. The cool part is that Showroom Seven has rented out the space that formally housed New York City’s Tunnel Nightclub. Say Whattt???!!!!! As someone who perpetually lives in the past, I have fond, fond, FOND memories of THE TUNNEL.

For those of you that are too young to remember or maybe didn’t live in NYC in the 90s, The Tunnel was the “it” nightclub. According to Wikipedia, “The Tunnel opened in early 1987 […] and was named for the abandoned train tunnel from the early 1900s that became the main dance floor.”

Old Navy Goes Tribal…Sigh

So I went shopping on 34th street yesterday.  I made a quick sweep through Old Navy to see the new summer items. When I got past the double doors… there it was! A huge poster of 3 models wearing some of the featured items in the front of the store. Apparently, the jungle, urban, or tribal look is in. Sigh…

The first thing that struck me was that in this Caribbean themed display the black, dark-skinned model was in the center of the spread and prominently featured. (I’ve always heard black models get the most work, if any during the summer months because clothes are usually brighter and look better against dark skin.)  Secondly, the black model was wearing a beautiful gold lame one-piece swim suit. Her hair was natural and her skin was glowing. It was here that I stopped being proud.

Internationally Vogue – April 2008 & May 2008 Editions

After the mess American Vogue created with that ugly ass cover with Lebron James and the supermodel Gisele, I figured I’d give other Vogue magazines a glance. I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful covers.

Vogue India

Vogue China

It’s nice to see images that represent the country’s general population. Now why can’t American Vogue do the same?

M.I.L.K. Accessories

A friend of mine and I are embarking on something huge!! Almost two years of thinking, dreaming, and wishing that we could create something in the fashion industry has finally come into fruition. After much thought we have come up with something great! M.I.L.K Accessories is our new company! M.I.L.K. will consist of small goods made of leather and other fabrics. Further down the road we hope to branch out into larger accessories.

We are in the beginning stages of creating a stunning logo, interviewing designers, getting funding together and doing the business set up. As the project comes along I will definitely post about it. I think all of you fashionistas will love out products as well as our brand.
