Jilly From Philly To Get Naked

Jill Scott, one of my favorite recording artists is set to take it all off for Allure Magazine’s May 2008 Naked issue. I’m excited that a mainstream magazine is featuring black women (Gabrielle Union will also pose). What’s also great is that Jill isn’t a size 2; she’s more like most women in America. I know they won’t show anything vulgar, but I hope Jill and Gabrielle have nice poses and nothing with their mouths open or looking menacing. We all know how Vogue likes to do it…

This seems like it is going to be a huge year for Jill. Not only is the song “Daydreaming” along with Lupe Fiasco running in an AT&T commercial (that’s big), she is set to star in the HBO series based on the books entitled, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. This is so great, we get to see authentic African dress and people and not in a stereotypical way. Way to go Jill! CNN has a great behind the scenes look at Jill filming in Botswana, Africa.

UPDATE: Urban Hoola has graciously uploaded scans of the photos in Allure Magazine. I must say I’m happy with their outcome.

STYLE ICON: ERYKAH BADU

Her album is out today y’all! I’m really feeling this new song by Ms. Badu. If the first single “Honey” is any indication of the rest of the album then I’m sure NEW AMERYKAH, Pt. 1: 4th WORLD WAR will be a huge hit. The music industry so needs it right now. The video is a refreshing entry in a sometimes formulaic scene. Some thought definitely went into this.

Erykah epitomizes urban chic. Funky purple lips, flowing hair, mod t-shirts, and funky leather jackets are truly trendsetting.  Whether it is with a brightly colored gele wrapped delicately around her head or a huge Angela Davis Afro, Erykah captures the best in individual style. Support recording artists…pop on over and buy a copy. Check her official website also.

STYLE ICON: Rihanna

rihanna

She’s a Bajan beauty direct from the parish of St. Michael, Barbados. Some have said she’s a Beyonce look-a-like, but not anymore. Because of the angled, jet black bob and more recently a Twiggy inspired do, Rihanna single-handedly has all women running to their hairdressers with pictures from magazines and computer screens.

With her success in the music industry, Robyn Rihanna Fenty is an in-demand superstar.  But even at the young age of 20, she is a fashion trendsetter.  With each passing photo spread she becomes more and more fierce!

I like her new songs and believe me they get heavy rotation on the radio. But my favorite, by far is her first song, “Pon de Replay” where she stayed close to her West Indian roots. Big up to the Bajan massive!

Accessorize Me: Blooms for Spring

“Florals? For Spring? Ground Breaking.” — Miranda Priestly, The Devil Wears Prada

Actually, yes, florals for spring. The runways at New York’s recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008 were blooming with florals on everything from dresses and hair accessories to cocktail rings.

While I’m not really a fan of floral print dresses, I love the look of flowers in the hair. Most think this look is reserved for formal occasions, cotillions, and fancy balls but as Dior showed us on the runways, flowers can be used effortlessly to give a relaxed feel to your hair. Everthing from headbands and clips are flowering everywhere this spring. There are great finds in rhinestone, beads, and silk.

Actually, this look really isn’t that new. Jazz legend, Billie Holiday made fresh flowers in her hair a staple of every performance. Lady Day, as she is affectionately known, was a musical genius with a voice as rich and as full as her creamy, brown skin. But the beautiful gardenia placed on the side of her head made her a style icon and a classic beauty.

To create this style go here by special order, here, and here. Leaving the hair a little messy works best.
