From March 13 – April 18, 2008, the work of Christian Louboutin will be shown at the FIT Museum in NYC. This is a must see for all shoe lovers. I know, I know, those red soles make me swoon too!
According to the The Museum at FIT website:
Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin explores the work of this contemporary luxury shoe designer, known for his exquisite and expensive footwear featuring eye-catching red soles. The exhibition will examine Louboutin’s inspirations, which range from gardens to bullfighters to fetish imagery, as well as investigating the explosive popularity of his shoes in today’s unprecedented climate of celebrity influence.
This exhibit is definitely worth seeing. I briefly saw it last night, but I plan on attending again and spending more time viewing designs by one of my favorite designers hands down!
In preparation for spring, summer, and my trip with my friends Linda and Diana (Kimmie too!) to The Bahamas, I thought I’d do a post on one of my favorite things, Havaianas (pronounced ah-vai-YAH-nas) flip flops. Havaianas is Portugues for Hawaiian and were created as a tribute to the Hawaiian islands. Made in Brazil, they are truly the best flip flop and if you wear them all spring and summer like I do, you’ll love the 46 year old super secret rubber formula that makes them so comfy. (Did you know Brazil makes the best rubber products?)
According to their website, everyone loves these flip flops in Brazil where there is a huge beach culture. Americans are now wearing them too.
“In Brazil, Havaianas are beloved and worn by all personalities from the average citizen to dignataries and celebrities. Since being introduced to the United States seven years ago, Havaianas have created an unprecedented cult following. Now referred to as the “best rubber sandal in the world,” Havaianas can be seen gracing the pages of the hottest fashion and sport magazines, strutting down the runways at New York Fashion Week and featured at red carpet events. Stylish Americans, including top athletes, rock stars and celebrities demanded the butter-soft comfort of these inexpensive flip flops, making Havaianas available at the most chic retailers and surf boutiques nationwide.”
They come in men and women’s styles and have many interesting patterns on them. Check out these cool pair:
Summer Dots, $20 (I know that’s a little more, but you won’t have to replace them!!!
They are made with European sizing so make sure you check the sizing chart! I have bought a few from this site, but as I mentioned before, I have a larger foot. Don’t fret if you do too, I have also purchased Havaianas from one of their authorized retailers, Barefoottess.com.
Once you try these flip flops you will never ever go to Old Navy to spend $3 for flip flops that don’t last the summer.
(FYI, they are one of Oprah’s favorite things as well!)
OMG!!! This is my dream job: Working the wardrobe closet on the Sex and the City movie with Patricia Field. Patricia Field, the costume designer is truly a genius. Watch the video, check out all the bags and become a disciple! Damn… I need to make more money. Sigh…

Honestly, I do! I’m not so different. The Empire Line Mini Dress in yellow is so timeless and chic. Her designs are amazing and so fluid. Paired with the signature red soles of Christian Louboutin Bow Ankle Booties and my eyes literally roll back in my head. Those cute tulip skirts that I’ve seen on Katie Holmes as she struts around Hollywood are wonderful. (The girl from “Dawson’s Creek” has truly turned into a fashion icon, hasn’t she?). But I have a huge confession to make, I can’t fit any of that shit. Stella’s designs don’t come in my size and the Louboutain’s are too narrow. As I flip through Vogue I rarely see anyone that looks like me, but I am not dissuaded. I’m a curvy girl, who loves fashion but cannot wear a lot of the clothing that I admire in the magazines and on the racks. But so what?! I have style.
My calves are huge, partly from swimming, but mostly from eating. My shoe size is past standard sizing. I wear a size 12 W and I’d have a
ridiculous sick shoe fetish if these deliciously green Manolo’s were just a little wider. But even though I do not fit sample sizes, I have my own style and an eye for what is “in”. Currently I think I’m rockin’ URBAN-CHIC.
I’m not going to rant about what I cannot fit or what I wish I could wear. What I am going to tell you is about the clothing I like, what I like to buy, what I feel is fashionable, and what looks absolutely crazy. I’m no fashion insider but I do live in Brooklyn, NY… we all have some sort style here! So below is a short list of boutiques I love. They are a little off the beaten path, but definitely worth a visit.
1) Addy & Ferro – A Ft. Greene, Brooklyn fashion cooperative with funky hats, dresses, and belts. They have some great tees by Cedella Marley, Bob’s daughter as well.
2) Harriet’s Alter Ego – A Park Slope, Brooklyn fashion cooperative with great dresses, blouses and African inspired wears. They even have a working art gallery.
So, to get the ball rolling, tell me some of the cute shops you go to.

I know she won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, but Diablo Cody truly needs to change her stylist. She wore a leopard print, silk chiffon gown with jewel detail by Dior by John Galliano. The outfit looked terrible on the red carpet. But it wasn’t until she got up to accept her Oscar did the hideousness of the dress truly come into view. The slit in the front was up to the “goody” and she kept putting her program over the slit to keep it from flying open. This just goes to show you that couture isn’t always so beautiful or so right. This dress in a plum or a red with no slit would have complemented her blunt bob haircut, red lips and pale skin.
But one thing I can say about Diablo Cody, born Brook Busey-Hunt is that she seemed, for lack of a better term, ‘real’. Apparently Stuart Weitzman wanted Diablo to wear the $1 Million dollar Retro Rose shoes on the red carpet. She felt disinclined. According to the Associated Press and Ms. Cody’s MySpace page, “they’re using me to publicize their stupid shoes and nobody asked me.”
The folks at Stuart Weitzman believed there was a disconnect between the two camps about the value and honor of wearing the shoes. Well I say, good for her for speaking up. She didn’t want to be seen wearing something so extravagant, I guess. But honestly Diablo, didn’t want to get a look at them? And kudos to you for not bowing down to pressure and keeping it 100% by wearing flats.
The 1940’s style retro t-strap high heels have more than 1,800 Kwiat diamonds weighing about 100 carats. Hmm… they’re OK, but not really that hot.

You may not know that I’m obsessed with anything Gucci. But who wouldn’t be? Check out the Grease High-Heel Platform Sandal in Tomato. OMG… they come in my size…Size 12. You can get them here.
Happy President’s Day! Guess where I’m going today? Shopping, of course. But here’s a little of the luxe life for you shoe obsessed fashionistas. By any chance have you seen these Gucci Sevigny High Heel Sandals in Gold? (They come in black but they aren’t nearly as fierce.) These shoes are, for lack of a better word… SICK!!! So, for those of you with an extra $700 to spend, you can go here!
(Update: 2/19/08:) In reading other blogs that I love, Fashionista.com has done a great piece on the above-mentioned shoe in their wonderful series: Adventures in Copyright.
